Sarah Obama, the grandmother of former President Obama’s family, died on March 29, 2021. She was 99 years old at the time.
As the former president’s step-grandmother, Mama Sarah was affectionately known and promoted education for girls and orphans in her rural Kogelo hamlet.
According to her daughter Marsat Onyango, she died around 4 a.m. local time while being treated at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, Kenya’s third-largest city in the country’s west.
“She passed away this morning. We are devastated,” Onyango said over the phone to The Associated Press.
